Ciao! (02 Jul 2009 | 10:22am)
We spent the weekend in Victoria without the kids. It was so nice. We took the Clipper up Saturday morning - it was a speedy trip.

We spent Saturday putzing around the city - we took a couple of the walking history tours, which I really enjoyed. We ate dinner at a little restaurant that had some great ideas, but lacked good execution. Not terrible - just not great.

Sunday we went on a 6+ hour wine tour of Vancouver Island - 5 wineries, lunch, and a chocolate tasting. It was so much fun. And we managed to control ourselves and only bought 4 bottles of wine. I was impressed.

We weren't leaving until 5:30 on Monday, we rented mopeds, and tooled around the area. We headed to Oak Bay (billed as "an English village") for afternoon tea, and rode along the waterfront for a couple of hours. I spent a lot of time waving at Chris and saying "Ciao!"

All in all, a nice and relaxing trip. I will post pictures soon (I hope).

Good to know. (22 Jun 2009 | 07:18am)
Riley: Mommy? What's oxy-gen?
me: It's the air that you breathe. Oxygen helps keep your body alive.
Riley: I guess I'll keep breathing, then.

Ok then.

Holy butt, it's early (22 Jun 2009 | 07:07am)
I had to be to work at 6:30 this morning, due to some pre-Anniversary sale activities taking place. Thank goodness we live close enough that I was able to sleep until 6am, and leave the house at 6:15.

I was about halfway to work before I realised, "You know, I probably shouldn't be driving a car."

So sleepy.

No sympathy? (16 Jun 2009 | 12:30pm)
It turns out that you don't get a lot of sympathy when you complain that you don't get good Blackberry reception in the washroom.

Take a look .. it's in a book ... (01 Jun 2009 | 12:57pm)
Teaching Riley to read has been a godsend. He's been working on it for a while now, and there was a period of time where every interaction with him was him shouting out letters and then asking "What does that spell?" That part wasn't fun.

He still has a few issues (do not ask how he pronounced "knocked" the first time he saw it), but now he spends most car trips reading. We drove to and from Marysville yesterday (90 minutes round trip) and he spent the entire time reading. We went grocery shopping, and he spent the trip in the cart reading - as opposed to out of the cart, running around making me wish you could get daquiries from the QFC Starbucks.

Of course, this means we need to really start going to the library more, which we've been trying to do anyway. I'd like to just pick one night every two weeks and have that be a library night - it's much cheaper than buying him new books every two weeks.

Disneyland! (29 May 2009 | 10:15am)
We're going to Disneyland at the end of October - we'll actually be there over Halloween, which should be fun for the kids.

Initially I had wanted to stay at the Grand Californian, as it's the closest to the parks - you can walk right into California Adventure from the lobby! But we decided the Disneyland Hotel was a more sensible choice, and also close enough to be convenient. We made our reservations this morning - unfortunately, they didn't have any rooms for the dates we wanted, so we're staying at the Grand Californian anyway.

I'm ambivalent about it - I had gotten excited about staying at the "classic" hotel, but I do love the Californian, so it all works out.

Next is flights - they are crazy cheap right now - $200 per ticket if we don't use miles, and $100 per ticket if we use miles. We're going with the miles option, as the savings will help offset the more expensive hotel, plus we have an airline miles card so we have a tonne of miles.

Now I'm just wishing the trip were closer - five months is so long to wait!

Ouchie! (18 May 2009 | 07:26pm)
I got a sunburn yesterday. Unfortunately, when you're as pale as I am, a "really awful sunburn" just looks like "normal skin colour", so I'm not getting the sympathy I'd like.

He's got your number .. (07 May 2009 | 10:08am)
A few nights ago, Riley informed me he's going to be a race car when he grows up. Not a race car driver - a race car.

He further informed me that he will be orange, and his number will be 867-5309.

Finally got the peas in (03 May 2009 | 03:49pm)
Last year we planted a 70-day variety of sugar snap peas in late March. This year, thanks to crazy weather and crazy work, we just got the peas in today. However, we planted a 60-day variety, so I'm pretty confident we'll still be able to plant and harvest a second crop this year, so that's nice.
